HUNTINGTON, IN – The 33rd annual Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 27th and 28th, on the wooded grounds of Hier’s Park on Huntington’s south side. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. An old-time worship service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, before the festival opens. We will be presenting a variety of entertainment on the stage. Saturday, Deadwood will be performing bluegrass music. In addition, the Applejack Kloggers, originating in the Appalachian Mountains, will be presenting a combination of clog dances to bluegrass and period music; the Jamie Olinger family, Jamie is a guitarist/vocalist now performing with his daughters; and the Geels family are fiddlers that now include Frances (a fiddle state fair champion), his son and grandson. On Sunday, we will have Gary Bishop & Friends with banjo music along with Shade and Shannon presenting a salute to Johnny Cash. In addition, The Company Singers and the Back Porch Players will be strolling through the park grounds to serenade visitors with Civil War era songs. Re-enactors in Pioneer Village, Olde Towne and an encampment will live the life of Indiana’s pioneer days. Visitors can get a close-up view of sheep shearing, blacksmithing, woodcarving, pottery making and many other arts of yesteryear. Vintage engines, tractors, cars and bicycles are on display. Shoppers can get their fill of antiques and hand-made crafts and the youngsters can occupy their time with pioneer games and activities – even ride a giant wooden merry-go-round. Flowers, fruits, vegetables and other farm produce will be available at the farmer’s market and the hungry can partake of everything from apple fritters to pudgie pies cooked over an open fire. You can also be entertained by two of our local high school groups: Masque and Gavel presenting a melodrama and the award-winning Varsity Singers show choir performing in an old-time saloon area. Huntington’s own Champion Hill Toppers will host a vintage base ball tournament on the festival grounds with games on both Saturday and Sunday. A complete festival schedule is available HERE. Admission to the festival is $3 for adults, $1 for all students and free to children under 5. No pets are allowed on the grounds. Free parking is available adjacent to the park.
